Your Dream Hospital Bag

It’s almost time for the arrival of your bundle of joy. The nesting has kicked in full force and the baby’s room is all set, and now it’s time to prepare your things for the hospital. So, here’s the low down on what you should consider bringing with you in your hospital bag. The key here is simplicity, and surprisingly, you don’t need a full department store stuffed into your overnight bag!

Some of these items are things I wish I had, and then there are things that are nice to have, but if you forget them it’s not the end of the world. Also surprisingly, you don’t need to pack a whole lot for your little one either because your hospital and/or birthing center should have you covered with baby basics for the first couple of days, but I’ve included a list for them as well.

Mommy Must Haves:

  • Soft comfy robe
  • Warm fuzzy socks or slippers
  • Chapstick or lip balm
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, etc.)
  • Headband and/or hair ties
  • Extra Long phone charger
  • Nipple cream
  • 2-3 pairs of button front PJ’s or nursing nightgowns
  • Postpartum panties (High waisted, hipster panties in case of C-Section)
  • Your going home outfit (comfy postpartum clothes nothing fancy)

For some of these key pieces you can check out Kindred Bravely as a one stop shop for all your postpartum comfort needs. I personally loved the comfy drawstring pants and brief panties, but this brand usually has sales and great bundle sets that make it affordable. This is just my recommendation, but find whatever suits your needs and budget.

Baby Must Haves:

  • Newborn photo outfit (some hospitals offer newborn photoshoots)
  • Swaddle blanket (some hospitals should have these on hand, but if you prefer your own bring a couple)
  • Breastfeeding pillow
  • Newborn onesies (some hospitals provide these, but if you would like to bring your own go for it)
  • Going home outfit
  • Car seat

Nice Haves:

  • Pillow/blanket from home
  • Massager
  • Essential Oils (peppermint, lavender, jasmine or sage)
  • Nursing bra
  • Breast Pump (some hospitals and birthing centers also provide these, but if you would like to practice with the one you will be using at home feel free to bring it).

Final Hospital Bag Tip

Babies are unpredictable and have a tendency to surprise us, so I would recommend having your bag packed by the time you reach week 36. That way if the unexpected happens you’re ready for it, and you can grab-n-go on your journey to motherhood.
